Surf School Day 2

Day 2 was even warmer than day 1, so we were pretty happy to be heading to the beach. After a quick bit of instruction on how to read rips etc and the obligatory repeating of the phrase “when caught in a rip, swim parallel to the beach” the group was back in the water, this time with the instruction to try a turn or two. C7 had also brought his boogie board along to use as he was determined to NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER surf again. Towards the end of the lesson he had a short paddle on one of the boards and even managed to stand up on a little wave (with some help from Mum), so maybe he’ll have another go next year.

This is the (very) edited version. I have a much better 6 minute version of bloopers set to Wipeout and the theme from Hawaii 5-0, but being almost 100Mb – it might just blow up a server or two. I’ll see if I can upload it later.

Learning to surf was a lot of fun, so now we have a new activity every summer – and perhaps one day, H11 will experience the endless summer.

We rounded off the day with a late lunch of Fish and Chips on the Streaky Bay foreshore before heading back to the beach-house for some rest!

Surf School Day 1

We headed out to Sceale Bay bright and early Wednesday morning. Down on the beach was Spike, the surfing instructor. We poured the kids into their wetsuits and the kids were assigned boards. H11 was particularly pleased to get the purple one.

After some brief instruction from Spike and a quick practice on the sand, it was time to head into the water. H11 took to it like a duck to water, but C7 was a bit nervous. With a bit of help from ACW he was happy to ride the board in on the little waves. After a few dumpings he dragged his board out of the water and announced that he was NEVER surfing again. He even went as far as to write “NO!NO!NO!NO!NO!NO!NO!NO! more surfing” in the sand (just in case we didn’t get the message).

ACW went out to help H11 as she was very busy making friends, but missing the good waves. There were a few mishaps, but she eventually got the hang of it.

Even though C7 protested, we were definitely coming back tomorrow so H11 could have another go. She spent most of the afternoon on ebay looking for a surfboard she could afford. So if you know anyone who has a 7’2” – 7’6” softboard and/or a small ladies wetsuit going cheap, let me know. PS apparently colour is important: pink, purple, florals. I have been told that just because you’re a surfer, doesn’’t mean you can’t still look good.
