SkyWatch Friday 29

swf29

I took this photo on my way to Port Augusta for a day of Christmas shopping. Being pressed for time, I didn’t want to stop to catch the lovely clouds that were forming. So I just hung the camera out the window and started snapping for about 5 minutes. I took about 20 photos. I love looking at the results later - they are so random – so you never know what you are going to get. Most are crappy and a few are quite breathtaking.

So last week we were in Cowell but I didn’t supply any substantial pictures, and this week I was going to take you down to Arno Bay. BUT…. we went to Cowell this weekend, so I can feel secure in the knowledge that I haven’t let you escape from photos of this lovely seaside town.

We had gone there for the annual fireworks display. They happen on the last Saturday of every year. I had neglected to bring my video camera with me, so here is some wonky footage – taken on my tripodless Nikon Coolpix camera – of the last minute (or so) set to the last minute (or so) of Wagner’s “Ride of the Valkyries”. Enjoy!

Even though the population of Cowell and surrounding districts is just over 1200, it still manages to support two pubs.  As the plaque says, in 1972/73 a black stump was placed between the two rival pubs stating “best pub this side of the black stump”…. Aussies will get the joke, but I’m not sure how to explain it to others, but if you take it at face value you will still get the idea.

For those of you who don’t do metric 2060 kg is about 4500 lb.

It is still the Christmas season and the town was still decorated. This year there were Santas just hanging around on every corner:

Someone had even decorated a road side tree and tied a present to it:

And now onto the weather. It is definitely warming up, with temps hanging around the high 20’s and low 30’s for the last week. Our hottest day last week was Boxing Day (Dec 26) when it reached 34. And it’s been 16 days since it last rained. Christmas Day was 32 and a bit humid – but we still managed a hot lunch!!

Monday 22nd Dec. Max Temp: 27C, Min Temp: 10C, Rainfall: 0mm
